Maritime Piracy and Security

Policy Conference in Seoul / Republic of Korea, April 12, 2013

On April 12, 2013, the EU-Asia Dialogue and the Sea Lanes of Communication Study Group Korea hold a joint event on Maritime Security in Seoul, Republic of Korea. Guest of honor was Mr. Jin Ha Hwang, Member of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea. The Policy Conference „Regional Cooperation on Maritime Security“ was attended by 33 participants. Among others, ReCAAP-ISC, EEAS, European Commission DG Mobility and Transport, the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, World Maritime University, and the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency sent representatives to the event. Besides several representatives from navies, researchers from France, Germany, India, Japan, People´s Republic of China, Republic of Korea, Singapore, and Taiwan attended the conference.

The topics discussed included current disputes in the East and South China Sea, regional cooperation in the Gulf of Aden and Arabic Sea as well as possibilities for regional cooperation between the Europe and Asia. Such topics for future cooperation are the Arctic Sea, information-sharing and joint military training to foster capacity building.
