Human Trafficking

International Workshop in Vienna / Austria, June 13, 2013

On June 13, 2013, the first conceptualizing workshop of the cluster Human Trafficking took place at the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna in Austria. The International Workshop “Human Trafficking – Challenges to Europe and Asia” was attended by 30 people. Among others, the International Organization for Migration, Taiwanese Immigration Agency, European External Action Service, INTERPOL, United Nations Inter-Agency Project on Human Trafficking in the Greater Mekong Sub-Region (UNIAP), Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, UNICEF, and United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime sent representatives to the event. Additional participants came from Cambodia, Czech Republic, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, Norway, Poland, Serbia, Singapore, Thailand, and the Philippines. The participants first analyzed current challenges with regard to human trafficking in Europe and Asia. Of particular interest was the aspect of law enforcement and legal issues. Before discussing opportunities for a closer cooperation between both continents, the importance of civil-society organizations in combating trafficking in human beings was highlighted.
