Policy Conference in Manila / The Philippines, October 11, 2013

On 11 October, 2013, the EU-Asia Dialogue and the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) held a joint conference on “Governance for Sustainable Agriculture” in Manila, the Philippines. The key note speech was delivered by Mr. Segfredo R. Serrano from the Department of Agriculture. The 31 participants represented, among others, the ASEAN Secretariat, Delegation of the EU to the Philippines, FAO, Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives Thailand, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development Vietnam, Philippine Institution for Development Studies, The Energy and Resources Institute India, Management Association of the Philippines, Center for Chinese Agricultural Policy, University of Wageningen, Institute for Sustainable Agriculture, Centre for Alleviation of Poverty through Sustainable Agriculture, and Indonesian Institute of Science. The topics discussed included food security and sustainable agriculture in Europe and Asia, policy framework for sustainable agriculture – in particular the aspect of green growth and the role of the business sector -, practical experiences such as site-specific technology, agro-logistics as well as integrated disease management, and topics for bi-regional cooperation. Examples of such cooperation are food wastage, capacity-building and cooperation on research.
