Conference on “Europe-Asia Security Cooperation on Counter-Terrorism” in Singapore, March 5-6, 2015
On 5-6 March, 2015, a conference on “Europe-Asia Security Cooperation on Counter-Terrorism” took place in Singapore and was attended by 56 experts from Australia, Bangladesh, China, the European Union, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the OSCE, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, Turkey, and United Kingdom.
It was clearly shown that direct linkages exist between Europe and Asia, for instance some European foreign fighters travel through Asia to Syria to avoid tracking. Youth in both regions are vulnerable to the propaganda by the so-called Islamic State and use the social media to recruit others. As the threat and modus operandi has many similarities, an exchange between European and Asian experts will be crucial in preventing attacks outside of Syria and Iraq. Also, the countries have taken different response measures which range from re-integration over prosecution to revoking of citizenship. As first results of these measures can be seen, a constant exchange on experiences and intelligence data will be much appreciated.
