Brussels EU-Asia Policy Briefings

Brussels Briefing, September 16, 2013

On September 16, 2013, the third public Brussels Briefing took place at the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Brussels. Guests of honor were Ms Mariko Sato, Chief of UN-Habitat Asia and Pacific, and Mr. Tadashi Matsumoto, Senior Policy Analyst for Green Cities, OECD. Both spoke on sustainable urban management in Asia and its role in fighting climate change. It was highlighted that medium-sized cities should be a key target of initiatives as they need assistance and can play a crucial role in making urban life more sustainable. Especially if these cities become compact, integrated and connected, this can benefit the urban population. It will also be important to de-couple income growth and greenhouse gas emissions as cities are one of the main causes for pollution.

In addition, Dr. Wilhelm Hofmeister, Director, Political Dialogue with Asia, Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Singapore, provided further information on cooperation opportunities between Asia and Europe as well as the EU-Asia Dialogue.
